Buildings talk. Cracks, sticking doors and sloping floors are the language, here’s what each sign means and when to act.

The signs, from an engineer’s checklist

• Diagonal stepped cracking in external brick or stonework, the classic sign of differential movement
• Doors and windows sticking progressively, or gaps opening above frames
• Sloping or dropped floors, especially towards one corner
• Gaps at skirtings, ceilings or between wall and frame
• Bowed or leaning walls, visible along the face in raking light
• External features moving apart, porches, bays and extensions separating from the main house

Active or historic?

The single most important question. Most movement in older West Yorkshire housing happened decades ago and stopped. An engineer distinguishes active from historic through crack characteristics, decoration evidence, and where needed simple monitoring over a few months, before anyone spends money on repair.

When to call

New cracking, changed cracking, or any of the signs above combined, that’s the moment for an inspection. Early diagnosis is always the cheap option.
